BBC Reith Lecturer 2006 - In the beginning was sound by Daniel Barenboim St John said, "In the beginning was the word", while Goethe
claimed that, "In the beginning was the deed". But my contention is:
In the beginning was sound.
Edgar Rice Burroughs - Tarzan 07 - Tarzan, The Untamed
Seventh in the timeless series. Tarzan returns to his African estate and finds carnage and disaster. His home is burned, his farm in shambles, and his beloved wife is a charred corpse, identifiable only by her rings. Silently he buries the body while swearing a terrible vengeance. Then he sets out to track the marauders who perpetrated this crime. He tracks them through warring armies - across a vast desert that no man has ever crossed - finally into a strange valley where only madmen live!
Edgar Rice Burroughs - Tarzan 06 - Jungle Tales of Tarzan
In this collection of 12 short stories, Burroughs returns to Tarzan's early years providing new depth and detail to the Lord of the Jungle, during his time among the great apes. Having learned to read from his father's books, Tarzan seeks to apply his knowledge to the world around him and to learn more about life, death, dreams, God, love, and friendship. Tarzan challenges his best friend Taug, in a fight to the death, but then risks his life to save him; he has nightmares after eating rancid elephant meat only to awake and be faced with a live, man-eating gorilla; twice he sports a lion's skin to play a practical joke, but he doesn't always have the last laugh!
Edgar Rice Burroughs - Tarzan 05 - Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar
A spy, Albert Werper, has been sent by Tarzan's long time foe, Achmet Zek, to abduct Jane. His plan changes when he discovers that Tarzan is bankrupt and must return to the lost city of Opar to bring back more gold. While Tarzan and the spy are in the treasure tomb, an earthquake strikes Tarzan down and blocks the exit. The only way out leads Werper to the sacrificial chamber of the Flaming God, where he soon finds himself the next victim. Tarzan is quick to recover his strength - but not his memory!
Tarzan is the original super hero - one most of us would like to be. It is easy to surrender ourselves to the thrill of his exploits in the damp African Jungle, yield to the pull of primitive impulse, and imagine we are back again in pre-historic times, swinging from tree to tree in glorious abandon through the primeval forest or fighting the great cave bear with rude stone weapons.
Edgar Rice Burroughs - Tarzan 04 - The Son of Tarzan
Paulvitch seeks revenge against Tarzan once again, this time by luring Lord Greystoke's rebellious son away from London. The great ape Akut foils the plot of revenge as he helps the boy escape the wrath of Paulvitch. Akut and the son flee to the savage African jungle where Tarzan was reared.
In his quest to survive, the young civilized boy reckons with life and death as he encounters the same dangers that his father once faced and ultimately matures into the mighty warrior, "Korak the Killer". In one of his many adventures, Korak rescues a young beauty, Meriem from an Arabian band of raiders. Like Tarzan, Korak discovers that the perils of the jungle are nothing compared to the evils of men.
