Understanding EinsteinBy Bertrand Russell Narrated by Sir Derek Jacobi
Ask a dozen people to name a genius and the odds are that ‘Einstein’ will spring to their lips. Ask them the meaning of ‘relativity’ and few of them will be able to tell you what it is. The basic principles of relativity have not changed since Bertrand Russell first published his lucid guide for the general reader. The ABC of Relativity is Bertrand Russell’s most brilliant work of scientific popularisation. With marvellous lucidity he steers the reader who has no knowledge of maths or physics through the subtleties of Einstein’s thinking. In easy, assimilable steps, he explains the theories of special and general relativity and describes their practical application to, amongst much else, discoveries about gravitation and the invention of the hydrogen bomb. ‘An ideal introduction to the theories of special and general relativity.’ –Nature

Kinds of Minds - Understanding Consciousness by Daniel Dennett What kinds of minds are there? Do starfish, amoebas or dogs have minds? What makes human minds so different? Brilliant philosopher and bestselling author Daniel C. Dennett goes back to basics to question whether there is one special phenomenon, sentience, that distinguishes some organisms from others. He discovers how different minds acquire their different powers, and examines the explosive importance of language. Dennett is as lively a reader as he is writer and this audio book adds an extra dimension of clarity and understanding to his beautifully written work.
At the beginning of Kinds of Minds Dennett asks, "What kinds of minds are there? And how do we know?" These two questions--the first ontological, the second epistemological--set the agenda for the book. Intuitions untutored by theory are not capable of answering these questions, Dennett argues, making it necessary to pursue insight from the evolutionary point of view. Accordingly, subsequent chapters are devoted to phylogenetic speculations about agency and intentionality, sensitivity and sentience, and perception and behavior. Particularly charming is the series of squiggly amoebas--the Darwinian, Skinnerian, Popperian, and Gregorian creatures--that illustrates the hierarchy of cognitive power. In the final chapter, Dennett returns to the original two questions, ending not with their answers, but, he hopes, with "better versions of the questions themselves."
This is a BBC Radio 4 full-cast production of Homer's epic seafaring adventure, dramatised by award-winning poet Simon Armitage, and starring Tim McInnerny and Amanda Redman 'My fame is written in the heavens, and my fate too...' So speaks Odysseus as he starts to recount his struggles to sail home to Ithaca, in one of the greatest pieces of storytelling in Western literature. It is his incredible traveller's tale - and also the story of his faithful wife, Penelope who waits for him, besieged by suitors, and their son, Telemachus who has a quest of his own.
Classics of American Literature (84 lectures, 30 minutes/lecture)
Taught by Arnold Weinstein
Brown University
Ph.D., Harvard University
Absorbing great American writing—the classics—is a unique way to understand the history of this country and to add to our own personal estate of literary wealth. Classic stories and poems of American literature are found in the pages of Franklin, Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Melville, Dickinson, Twain, Whitman, Faulkner, James, Eliot, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Steinbeck, Morrison, and many others.
As Professor Arnold Weinstein reminds us: "American classics are wonderfully rich fare. America is a mythic land, a place with a sense of its own destiny and promise, a place that has experienced bloody wars to achieve that destiny. The events of American history shine forth in our classics." When was the last time you read them? Possibly not as recently as you'd like. Why? Not because you wouldn't love it. But perhaps the demands of your daily life or some other reason have prevented this pleasure. Now, here is the opportunity to gain an extraordinary familiarity with each of these authors within a manageable amount of time, as well as review the great works you may already know.
