Encyclopedia of Rhetoric
75

Encyclopedia of RhetoricThis ambitious new encyclopedia covers rhetoric from all times and places in some 200 signed entries by 120 scholarly contributors from around the world. Bibliographies are appended to each article, and the index and a Synoptic Outline of Contents provide fine access points. Typical articles include "Public Speaking," "Queer Rhetoric," "Synecdoche," and "Science." This work abstracts rhetoric from people, places, and cultures in search of the "principles" of rhetoric, excluding, for example, entries for relevant historical figures. This emphasis on the abstract differentiates it from the Encyclopedia of Rhetoric and Composition (Garland, 1996), which has more than twice as many entries in about the same number of pages and includes, for example, entries for people. Though these two excellent books often duplicate each other, both include information and insights not found in the other. Libraries serving patrons concerned with the art and history of rhetoric should have both. Given the high price of both books, other libraries will have to choose between the practicality of the older one and the more theoretical emphasis of the newer one.

Gender and Education [Two Volumes]: An EncyclopediaIn this two volume set, educators explore the intersection of gender and education. Their entries deal with educational theories, research, curricula, practices, personnel, and policies, but also with variations in the gendering of education across historical and cultural contexts. The various contributors discuss gender as a social construction. The latest research on boys and masculinities, as well as girls and feminism, is included. The entries in this work cover the breadth of topics related to gender and education. They provide reference information on the history and condition of gender and education from elementary to high school. Entries cover such topics as: alternative schools, historically black colleges and universities in the United States, military colleges and academies, private and public single-sex and co-educational schools, literacy, mathematics achievement, women's centers, teacher interactions with girls and boys, affirmative action in U.S. higher education, sororities and fraternities, educator sexual misconduct, expectations of teachers for boys and girls, heterosexism and homophobia, bullying, harassment, and violence among students, salaries of male and female educators, school choice and gender equity, disabled students and gender equity, Title IX and school sports, black feminism, womanism, and queer theory.

Encyclopedia of the Age of Imperialism, 1800-1914 [Two Volumes]

Encyclopedia of the Age of Imperialism, 1800-1914 [Two Volumes]This scrupulously researched compendium provides a remarkable history of the period 1800 to 1914. But what makes the period, and therefore this book, especially vital is that the period of European imperialism 1800-1914 was so significant in shaping global politics in the twentieth century and even up to today.

Unlike most encyclopedias this volume has a brilliantly conceived unifying theme about the struggle for territory in Europe and beyond for over a hundred years. Carl Cavanagh Hodge is an excellent editor. He has brought together sixty scholars to define, describe and explain over 800 topics of imperialism. Hodge's excellent introductory synthesis of the period from 1800 to 1914 binds together the disparate subjects. He then indexes the book in such as way as to allow the reader to examine the historical entries from the point of view of concepts, treaties, alliances, geographical regions and countries, battles, institutions, leaders, statesmen, conflicts and wars.
