This book is a collection of essays, some previously published and some recent papers appearing in print for the first time, that have a number of things in common. First, they are nontechnical papers that I hope can be read by nonspecialists. Second, they all assume the correctness of my theoretical work in language acquisition, but make no attempt to defend it or even to review the many studies it is based on. This is done elsewhere. The essays in this volume explore some extensions and applications of the theory and illustrate how the theory helps provide insights and solve problems in several areas.
In Other Words: The Science and Psychology of Second-Language Acquisition
More than five thousand languages are currently spoken around the globe. Learning to speak one of them is virtually effortless for most of us, so why is it commonly so difficult to learn a second language? Unraveling this mystery, two top researchers in the field explain how language acquisition can be an odyssey of self-discovery.
An Outline of Second Language Acquisition Theories
The book provides a clear and concise description of current views on the theories of Second Language Acquisition (SLA). Most probably an abridged publication of a doctoral dissertation. From the point of view of the student this is an ideal starting point for further library research, as the book provides a sound bibliography and is amply annotated in the main text.
A must read for anyone writing a thesis in SLA, teaching English as a FL (Foreign Language) or SL (Second Language).
Input and Evidence: the raw material of second language acquisition is an empirical and theoretical treatment of one of the essential components of SLA: the input to language learning mechanisms. It reviews and adds to the empirical studies showing that negative evidence (correction, feedback, repetitions, reformulations) play a role in language acquisition in addition to that played by ordinary conversation.
