True to Life - Why Truth MattersTrue to Life - Why Truth Matters

Why does truth matter, when politicians so easily sidestep it and intellectuals scorn it as irrelevant? Why be concerned over an abstract idea like truth when something that isn't true gets the desired result?

In this engaging and spirited book, Michael Lynch argues that truth does matter, in both our personal and political lives. Lynch explains that the growing cynicism over truth stems in large part from our confusion over what truth is

altWe are all economists—when we work, buy, save, invest, pay taxes, and vote. It repays us many times over to be good economists. Economic issues are active in our lives every day. However, when the subject of economics comes up in conversation or on the news, we can find ourselves longing for a more sophisticated understanding of the fundamentals of economics.

  • How can I get an overview of the entire U.S. economy?
  • Why do budget deficits matter?
  • What exactly does the Federal Reserve do?

Regard for the Other: Autothanatography in Rousseau, De Quincey, Baudelaire, and WildeRegard for the Other: Autothanatography in Rousseau, De Quincey, Baudelaire, and WildeAlthough much has been written on autobiography, the same cannot be said of autothanatography, the writing of one's death. This study starts from the deconstructive premise that autobiography is aporetic, not or not only a matter of a subject strategizing with language to produce an exemplary identity but a matter also of its responding to an exorbitant call to write its death. The I-dominated representations of particular others and of the privileged other to whom a work is addressed, must therefore be set against an alterity plaguing the I from within or shadowing it from without.

Shakespeare's Feminine Endings: Disfiguring Death in the Tragedies

Shakespeare's Feminine Endings: Disfiguring Death in the TragediesIn this elegant and provocative book, Philippa Berry draws on feminist theory, postmodern thought and queer theory, to challenge existing critical notions of what is 'fundamental' to Shakespearean tragedy. She shows how, through a network of images clustered around feminine or feminized characters, these plays 'disfigure' conventional ideas of death as a bodily end, as their figures of women are interwoven with provocative meditations upon matter, time, the soul, and the body. The scope of these tragic speculations was radical in Shakespeare's day; yet they also have a surprising relevance to contemporary debates about time and matter in science and philosophy.

A Matter of ClassA Matter of Class

A Matter of Class by Mary Balogh

Reginald Mason is wealthy, refined, and, by all accounts, a gentleman. However, he is not a gentleman by title, a factor that pains him and his father within the Regency society that upholds station over all else. That is, until an opportunity for social advancement arises, namely, Lady Annabelle Ashton. Daughter of the Earl of Havercroft, a neighbor and enemy of the Mason family, Annabelle finds herself disgraced by a scandal, one that has left her brandished as damaged goods. Besmirched by shame, the earl is only too happy to marry Annabelle off to anyone willing to have her.
