Outer Dark is the second novel by U.S. writer Cormac McCarthy, published in 1968. The time and setting are nebulous, but can be assumed to be somewhere in the Southern United States, sometime around the turn of the twentieth century. The novel tells of a woman (Rinthy) who bears her brother's baby. The brother, Culla, leaves the nameless infant in the woods to die, but he tells his sister that the newborn died of natural causes and had to be buried. Rinthy discovers this lie, and decides to set out and find the baby for herself.
David Schow's terrific overview of this classic television series is stuffed with illustrations many of them never published before. His critical assessment of the various episodes is always well informed (although there are a couple that I do disagree with very strongly). The most important thing is that this groundbreaking gothic science fiction/horror series is finally being appreciated.
Set in an unnamed part of Appalacia, sometime around the turn of the century, this book is a tale of love and loss. The story begins as a woman bears her brother's child - a boy. He leaves the baby in the woods and tells her he died. Discovering her brother's lie, she sets forth to find him.

Strange Attractors
In lieu of a preface, John's history and earlier adventures are revealed via one of Carver's several futuristic beings?a chaos-manipulating Quarx that lives inside the protagonist's head. Readers, too, might hope for the Quarx's clarifying assistance: characters' motivations are somewhat hazy here? Why must John battle Shipworld's malevolent elements? What is Ik's secret agenda??and an assortment of odd keystrokes that supposedly identify the speakers in a series of inner and outer voices proves confusing.
