Teaching the Critical Vocabulary of the Common Core: 55 Words That Make or Break Student Understanding
Your students may recognize words like determine, analyze, and distinguish, but do they understand these words well enough to quickly and completely answer a standardized test question? For example, can they respond to a question that says "determine the point of view of John Adams in his 'Letter on Thomas Jefferson' and analyze how he distinguishes his position from an alternative approach articulated by Thomas Jefferson"? Students from kindergarten to 12th grade can learn to compare and contrast, to describe and explain, if they are taught these words explicitly.
Information communication technologies have become the necessity in everyday life enabling increased level of communication, processing and information exchange to extent that one could not imagine only a decade ago. Innovations in these technologies open new fields in areas such as: language processing, biology, medicine, robotics, security, urban planning, networking, governance and many others. The applications of these innovations are used to define services that not only ease, but also increase the quality of life.
This series examines research, theory and practice in the context of university education, professional practice, work and society. The series explores places where two or more of these arenas come together. Themes that are explored in the series include: university education of professions, society expectations of professional practice, professional practice workplaces and strategies for investigating each of these areas.
The Internet and associated technologies have been around for almost twenty years. Networked access and computer ownership are now the norm. There is a plethora of technologies that can be used to support learning, offering different ways in which learners can communicate with each other and their tutors, and providing them with access to interactive, multimedia content. However, these generic skills don’t necessarily translate seamlessly to an academic learning context.
