Contentious Issues - Discussion Stories for Young PeopleContentious Issues - Discussion Stories for Young People

Challenging prejudice, sterotyping and judgemental behaviour, this volume consists of 40 discussion stories which reflect society and the problems young people face today. Aimed at promoting discussion and awareness, the author challenges young people to consider events and the part they themselves play in life, thus producing more responsible and independantly thinking young adults. In particular, children with Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning autism often have difficulty coming to grips with social situations, so that the stories in this volume should be especially useful for those working with such children.

Stancetaking in Discourse - Subjectivity, Evaluation, InteractionStancetaking in Discourse - Subjectivity, Evaluation, Interaction

This volume contributes to the burgeoning field of research on stance by offering a variety of studies based in natural discourse. These collected papers explore the situated, pragmatic, and interactional character of stancetaking, and present new models and conceptions of stance to spark future research. Central to the volume is the claim that stancetaking encompasses five general principles: it involves physical, attitudinal and/or moral positioning; it is a public action; it is inherently dialogic, interactional, and sequential; it indexes broader sociocultural contexts; and it is consequential to the interactants.

These range from Scotland to New Zealand, from Canada to South Africa, covering all the major forms of the English language around the world. Central to the volume is the question of how genuine written representations are. Here the emphasis is on the techniques and methodology which can be employed when analysing documents.

The second volume in the definitive collection of Foucault's shorter writings. Few philosophers have had as strong an influence on the twentieth century as Michel Foucault. Aesthetics, Method, and Epistemology, the second volume of Essential Works of Foucault, 1954-1984, surveys Foucault's diverse but sustained address of the historical forms and interplay of passion, experience, and truth. Now in paperback, this volume includes commentaries on the work of de Sade, Rousseau, Marx, Nietzsche, Freud, Roussel, and Boulez.
