As with all major writing projects, the scope of this book evolved and expanded over time. Initially I intended to define and describe the origins of a relatively limited set of concepts important to the history of American business. It quickly became apparent that certain people played vital roles in inventing or innovating devices, mechanisms, or processes that profoundly shaped how business was and is conducted in the United States.
The collection of dialect profiles that led to American Voices began innocently. But it was hardly by accident. In fact, it developed from a shared vision by the co-editors of this volume. In 1997, publisher Ben Ward launched a magazine dedicated to bringing language issues to the attention of allied service professionals and to the American public in an attractive, readable format. Book only!

This book makes American English phrases "duck soup." If you "take the bull by the horns" are you taking decisive action or running for your life? When you "smell a rat" are you sensing something's wrong or calling an exterminator? For American English speakers, these phrases are part of their everyday language. But if English is your second language, they can be a source of confusion.
"101 American English Idioms" takes the mystery out of these common U.S. expressions and explains their meanings in context. On the audio CD, native speakers read each of the 101 idioms, so you can hear how American English sounds and practice what you have learned. What Americans really mean when they say . . .Drive someone up a wall--annoy someone greatly Raise a stink--protest strongly Pull someone's leg--fool someone All thumbs--clumsy Shoot the breeze--chat informally Feel like a million dollars--feel wonderful Duck soup--easy, effortless Note from Admin: we have already had this book appear at Englishtips, but that was a half-book, text-only version, while pictures do make a difference! I will shortly delete that publication, as this one is latest edition, full and contains AudioCD. REDUCED VERSION by Pumukl
