How Things Work Cars,Bikes, Trains, and Other Land Machines
Grade 3-5-- The subjects of wheeled vehicles and floating machines are treated in omnibus fashion in these two useful but densely packed titles. A one-page illustrated timeline of "famous firsts" and an introduction are followed by spreads depicting such topics as "Drum and Disc Brakes" or "Hydrofoils." Sidebars focus on particular aspects, such as (in Boats ) knots, water jets, ballast; and (in Cars ) friction, combustion, or compression. Several boxes present things to do, such as making a water-jet boat from a balloon and a large plastic bottle.
ScienceWorks for Kids: Simple Machines, Grades 1-3
For hands-on activities about force, work, wheels, pulleys, and inclined planes that connect science with real life, choose Simple Machines. This book, designed with good science and easy teaching in mind, covers these concepts:
- work is done when a force is used to move something over a distance
An invention is the creation of something new. Most early inventions were a result of necessity. Many modern inventions are a result of changes to previous inventions, such as innovations or additions to existing devices. Inventions (like machines) have changed the way people live and work. Machines are devices that assist with human tasks.
