Everyday life in Baltimore, USA, is full of problems - getting the washing done, buying groceries and dog food, avoiding the neighbors... After the death of his son and the departure of his wife, Macon's attempts to run his own life become increasingly desperate - and more and more odd.

Meanwhile, he has to get on with his work, writing tourist guides for business people.  Then his dog Edward starts to bite people, an he has to send for Muriel, the dog trainer.

The Song of Hiawatha is based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem written in 1855 and based on the hero Hiawatha and his lover Minehaha. The poem compiles the legends and folklore of the Objibwe and other Native American people and concludes with the arrival of the white man.

You can't capture and live with wild animals for over twenty years without playing a part in the lives of those animals. After a while, they seem to become half-human - take on human traits. But there are also people living in the jungle country. These people are sometimes as interesting as the animals, snakes, and birds that I have captured.
