White Mughals - Love and Betrayal in Eighteenth-Century IndiaWhite Mughals - Love and Betrayal in Eighteenth-Century India

Conjuring all the sweep of a great nineteenth-century novel, acclaimed author William Dalrymple unearths the fascinating story of the British Resident at the court of the Nizam of Hyderabad, James Kirkpatrick, who in 1798 fell in love with the great-niece of the Hyderabadi prime minister. To marry her, Kirkpatrick converted to Islam and even became a double agent working against the East India Company. Shedding light on the many eccentric Westerners during this period who "turned Turk," adopting Indian customs, dress, and religions, Darymple brings to life a compelling and largely unwritten story of Britain’s rule over India.

Nevil Shute - Slide Rule

Nevil Shute best describes this autobiography in his own words: "Most of my adult life, perhaps all the worthwhile part of it, has been spent messing about with airplanes. For 30 years there was a period when airplanes would fly when you wanted them to, but there were still fresh things to be learned on every flight, a period when airplanes were small and so easily built that experiments were cheap and new designs could fly within six months of the first glimmer in the mind of the designer.

Great Women of Imperial Rome - Mothers and Wives of the CaesarsGreat Women of Imperial Rome - Mothers and Wives of the Caesars

A good basic introduction to the stories of various notable women from Imperial Rome. This is perhaps more suited to those who are new to Ancient Rome, simply because Burns generally does not question the ancient sources, instead picking and choosing between the accounts of Tacitus, Dio and Suetonius for the Julio-Claudian period. Occasionally, he provides an argument of his own, but on the whole the work is more a summary of the key primary sources.

Costume and Fashion - The Medieval WorldCostume and Fashion - The Medieval World

The Medieval World focuses on the styles found in Europe from 1340 to 1460, which is most frequently represented as "medieval" in movies, TV, books, and art. During this time, wool was widely available, the length of clothing indicated one's wealth, and luxurious fabrics from the East, such as silks, brocades, and damasks, were in demand among the rich. Tapestries from the time period, pictures from movies and plays, and detailed photographs show the clothing and accessories men and women, rich and poor, wore during the medieval period.
