A Larger Sense of Purpose: Higher Education and Society
Universities were once largely insular institutions whose purview extended no further than the campus gates. Not anymore. Today's universities have evolved into multifaceted organizations with complex connections to government, business, and the community. This thought-provoking book by Harold Shapiro, former president of both Princeton University and the University of Michigan, and Chairman of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission under President Bill Clinton, explores the role the modern university should play as an ethical force and societal steward.

Final Target
In Vasaro, France, Michael Travis aborts an attempt to kidnap Cassie, the daughter of the American President. Many men die while her nanny, a traitor, tries to hand Cassie over to the terrorists. Cassie goes into a catatonic state. The President has many doctors try to bring Cassie back but they all fail. President Andreas is forced to turn to Dr. Jessica Riley for help. Jessica once succeeded in pulling her own sister Melissa out of the same condition even though it took years to accomplish that feat.
October arrives in Moose County on the heels of a long drought, and the citizens of Pickax worry about wildfires. Their fears are realised in an unexpected manner, with a case of arson - and the shooting of a volunteer fire-watcher as he is reporting the blaze. The crime wave continues as the president of the curling club is pushed to his death down a flight of stairs, and it's up to Qwilleran and Co. to sniff out the rat who is responsible for it all.
The glittering cast of characters includes Vice President Joe Aprile, who plans to become president, if he can avoid a tempting vice; a glamorous Washington hostess and fund-raiser, Elfie Dorrance, with a propensity for marrying rich and powerful men and then grieving prettily at the end - their end; and Chris Hedras, a special assistant to the vice president, with some very special ambitions. And, of course, Annabel Smith, gallery owner, and Mac Smith, law school professor.
