There are dragons all over Anne McCaffrey's house. Some she's bought, but many have been made for her by adoring fans and given to her as gifts. I don't make dragons, of course. But whenever circumstances allow, I do try to bring her American bacon, something she can't get easily in Ireland, and something which she has taught all her friends there to love, as well! I remember the first time I went to visit her, when she was still living in her old, much smaller but very homey, house.
The setting is the West Indies, with the post-Napoleonic "revolution" against the ban on slavery. The navy is stretched to the limit, ships laid up, appointments for captains and senior officers hard to obtain. There's a lot of rivalry, as well as the discomfort of working with ships and sailors who have only recently been deadly enemies. Adam and the Unrivalled are in the thick of it.

If you liked Drinker of Souls, you will probably like this book. This book stands alone though and you don't have to read Drinker of Souls to enjoy this one. It has been several generations since Bran's last adventure when she is called to "remember the promise" she made to the heirs of Harra Hazzani (a character from Drinker of Souls). From there coincidence abounds as Bran runs into the current generation of offspring, from her previous companions of adventure.
An ancient, awesome force has spirited away almost the entire population of Snowfield, a small town in California. The bodies of those remaining have been bizarrely disfigured. What hope can there be for the few people still alive?
A grave robber and a corpse reunite Navajo Tribal Police Lt. Joe Leaphorn and Officer Jim Chee. As Leaphorn seeks the identity of a murder victim, Chee is arresting Smithsonian conservator Henry Highhawk for ransacking the sacred bones of his ancestors. As the layers of each case are peeled away, it becomes shockingly clear that they are connected, that there are mysterious others pursuing Highhawk, and that Leaphorn and Chee have entered into the dangerous arena of superstition, ancient ceremony, and living gods.
