Discourse Intonation in L2: From Theory and Research to Practice
3

Discourse Intonation in L2: From Theory and Research to PracticeIn accordance with major shifts in emphasis in both general and applied linguistics, this text about intonation has two main goals. Firstly to show the practical importance of intonation, particularly discourse intonation, which is acknowledged in theoretical linguistics as an indispensable component of language and communication and which thus ought to be taught to L2 learners. Secondly to integrate theory and practice in order to render intonation accessible to teachers and pedagogues, and to suggest a pedagogical approach to the teaching of discourse-based phonology and intonation in L2 instruction.

Are Some Languages Better than Others?

Are Some Languages Better than Others?This book sets out to answer a question that many linguists have been hesitant to ask: are some languages better than others? Can we say, for instance, that because German has three genders and French only two, German is a better language in this respect? Jarawara, spoken in the Amazonian jungle, has two ways of showing possession: one for a part (e.g. 'Father's foot') and the other for something which is owned and can be given away or sold (e.g. 'Father's knife');
is it thus a better language than English, which marks all possession in the same way?

Scotland: A Short History
5

Scotland: A Short HistoryChristopher Harvie, one of Scotland's leading historians and political writers, takes a long view of Scotland: its land, people, and culture. Scotland: A History sweeps from the earliest settlements to the new Parliament of 1999 and beyond. It describes the unique multi-ethnic kingdom which emerged from the Dark Ages, the small, proud nation manoeuvring among the great powers of medieval Europe, and the radical reformation which forced a compromise with its mighty southern neighbour. Harvie follows Scotland's tense partnership with England for over 400 years, through dual monarchy and union, enlightenment and empire, industrialization and de-industrialization.
